Homemade Apple Pie

Ingredients
  

For the filling
  • 6 cups apples (about 6 medium peeled, cored and cut into 1/4 inch thick slices) Mix of sweet and tart apples is recommended.
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2-3 tablespoons butter (cut into small pieces) Scatter evenly over the apples before adding the top crust.
For the crust
  • 1 pastry for double pie crust Store-bought crust can be used for convenience.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Line a 9-inch pie plate with the bottom crust and trim the edge. Set aside.
  3. In a bowl, combine the apples with sugar, flour, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, and lemon juice.
Assembly
  1. Spoon the apple mixture into the crust-lined pie plate, then dot the apples with butter.
  2. Roll out the second pie crust and cover the apple mixture.
  3. Seal the edges and crimp them.
  4. Cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  5. Brush the top with an egg wash and sprinkle with sugar.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.
  2. Reduce the oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) and continue baking for an additional 30 minutes or until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown.
Cooling
  1. Cool the pie on a cooling rack before serving.

Notes

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Pair with cheese for a unique flavor.
