Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 piece pork shoulder (about 4-5 pounds)
  • 1 can Dr Pepper
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
Seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
Cooking Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil For searing the pork

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sear the pork shoulder on all sides until browned.
  2. Place the sliced onion and minced garlic in a slow cooker.
  3. Put the seared pork shoulder on top of the onions and garlic.
  4. In a bowl, mix the Dr Pepper, BBQ sauce, smoked paprika, pepper, salt, and garlic powder. Pour the mixture over the pork.
Cooking
  1. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or until the pork is tender and shreds easily.
  2. Remove the pork from the slow cooker and shred it using two forks. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker, mixing it with the juices.
Serving
  1. Serve the pulled pork on buns or over rice, garnished with additional BBQ sauce if desired.

Notes

Make sure to sear the meat well for added flavor. For a little heat, consider adding cayenne pepper to the seasoning mix. Experiment with different BBQ sauces for varied flavors. If you have time, let the pork sit in the fridge overnight after cooking to enhance the flavor.
