Making the Blackberry Sauce
- Combine blackberries, sugar, water, lemon juice, cinnamon, and vanilla extract in a pot.
- Cook this mixture over medium heat until the blackberries break down and the sugar fully dissolves.
Preparing the Dumplings
- In a bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, and sugar.
- Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in buttermilk and vanilla extract until just combined.
Cooking the Dumplings
- Drop spoonfuls of dumpling batter into the simmering blackberry sauce.
- Cover the pot and let dumplings cook for about 15 minutes without lifting the lid.
Serving
- Serve blackberry dumplings warm, directly from the pot, optionally with vanilla ice cream and drizzled blackberry sauce.
