Ingredients
  

For the Blackberry Sauce
  • 1 pound blackberries (fresh or frozen) Use fresh for a brighter flavor, but frozen works as well.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Dumplings
  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 6 Tablespoons unsalted butter (cold and cut into pieces) Make sure to use cold butter.
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Method
 

Making the Blackberry Sauce
  1. Combine blackberries, sugar, water, lemon juice, cinnamon, and vanilla extract in a pot.
  2. Cook this mixture over medium heat until the blackberries break down and the sugar fully dissolves.
Preparing the Dumplings
  1. In a bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, and sugar.
  2. Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in buttermilk and vanilla extract until just combined.
Cooking the Dumplings
  1. Drop spoonfuls of dumpling batter into the simmering blackberry sauce.
  2. Cover the pot and let dumplings cook for about 15 minutes without lifting the lid.
Serving
  1. Serve blackberry dumplings warm, directly from the pot, optionally with vanilla ice cream and drizzled blackberry sauce.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat gently on low heat.
